At times it irked me as Stadler dwelt on theories about Woody that seemed tenuous at best like his description of Bound For Glory being about men mothering other men in the absence of women. Stadler is on firmer ground when he examines the influence of Woody's dancer wife Marjorie on his music, especially Woody's foray into children's music. Stadler examines the lesser known corners Guthrie's work, including his writings and drawings about lynching in America, his journals about his illness and the philosophy of medical treatment in America, Woody's aborted Sacco and Vanzetti project, and his highly sexual writings including the posthumously published House of Clay. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ojalá -- Songs of the left : I first learned about Woody Guthrie when I heard that Silvio Rodriguez was not allowed to come into the United States to sing in a tribute concert for Pete Seeger. I didn't know who Pete Seeger was, and I didn't know who Arlo Guthrie (who also sang in the tribute) was. I din't know why it mattered so much that Arlo's father was Woody Guthrie-- but I knew they all had Silvio Rodriguez in in common , so they all must have sung the songs of the left. Gone is the romance of the great man and his guitar — instead we get a Guthrie of flesh and feeling and the chance to overthrow the tired opposition between radical politics and human tenderness.
